  1. OCTOBER POEM
  2.  
  3. Climbing up through the feeble mist, the sun
  4. begins to thaw the hazy ginger land,
  5. casts sunbeams through the beeches on dead leaves:
  6. sublimes their ermine. Pheasants bark and walk
  7. into wet grass. A tractor laced with gulls
  8. ploughs in the valley, turning the fat earth;
  9. and dying bracken, rimed by the sharp night,
  10. looses thin spiral vapours to the air.
  11. A soaring sky of pale, ascetic blue
  12. now circles up and above the hills
  13. and launches on its icy voice
  14. an endless song of winter.
